Honestly, if I had never met my best friend, DJ Ed Rodriguez, the idea of DJing never would have occurred to me – he inspired me to get my feet wet and try. When I started my classes, I never thought I would DJ in front of people, certainly not in big events! I thought I would just do it at home alone to relax after a long day’s work. I was and am lucky to have the support of many friends, teachers and mentors, both locally in Vancouver and across Mexico, who have propelled my DJ project so quickly. Without their love and support, I would not have been able to accomplish as much as I have so far in my career, and I am so incredibly grateful for each and every one of them.
My goal in every set is to convey a story through vocals and high-energy music. I would describe my style as ‘future nostalgia’ – sets that feel fresh, modern and new both in terms of rhythms and vocals, but that also have a flavour and zest of the past. My favorite part of circuit music is when a set makes you feel as though you are hearing a familiar favorite song for the first time. They also call me “la canadiense más mexicana” (“the most Mexican Canadian”), because I learned to speak Spanish fluently a few years ago with a Mexican accent. As a result, I love incorporating Latino rhythms & vocals in my sets.
Connection! I have been able to connect with partygoers, other DJs and event producers in a distinct way as a result of being a DJ, connections I likely would not have made had I not become a DJ. I have also been able to visit cities and countries I had never been to. These experiences and relationships have been invaluable. It has also strengthened my relationship with my best friend Ed Rodriguez (who I was lucky enough to be able to do a back-to-back set with in Monterrey this year).

I love the community of the circuit. You can meet people from all over the world, and encounter them again across the globe at different events, over time developing meaningful connections with people you otherwise may not have met. I also love the creativity that comes along with circuit events – the event themes, the costumes, and stage designs always impress me.
First: Practice, practice, practice! The old adage “practice makes perfect” applies perfectly to being a DJ.
Second: Everyone has a unique voice – the challenge is finding yours and conveying it to your audience when you perform. But if you can accomplish this, it will set you apart from other DJs. It sounds corny, but it’s true!
Apart from being a DJ, I also look after terminally-ill patients as a palliative care physician. My work in palliative care has given me deep appreciation for my life and health, and I try to live each day to the fullest. Being a DJ has really helped me become a better palliative care physician, as it helps me navigate the heavy emotions that come along with my work.
